Default are job offers negotiable in Australia

Ok, so I got offered a job in Australia. Here in the U.S., for full-time, salaried jobs it's common to ask for a little more money or a little more vacation. Does this happen in Oz?

In most cases you certianly can negotiate your salary package. However Vacation time is usually not negotiable, and can't be taken until after your first 12 months.

Oddly enough, Australian workers enjoy some the highest amounts of paid annual leave in the world (4 weeks). Yet we still work more hours than workers in many other nations.

^ What I was going to say too ^

Definitely salary but paid leave is 4 weeks. I can understand negotiating more in the US because 2 weeks is ridiculous but 4 is pretty good.

The only alteration to paid leave that I've encountered is some companies allow you to "buy" more, i.e., you can get 2 weeks more vacation and your pay is prorated over the year to pay for it. Some people will do this with 4 extra weeks, like if they've got kids and want more time off to spend with them during school holidays. I've seen that at a large bank.

Not generally for public service jobs, or jobs under a union award.
