So there is less rainfall in Victoria now? The gardens will not turn brown from "relatively warmer" and "slightly less rainfall". It's from a distinct lack of rain over a number of years.

I was there in August (and almost every 6 weeks thru the year). The Botanic gardens were dry, brown. driving across from NSW to Vic you see a distinct change. The state is in drought conditions

I lived in Melbourne for most of my life. There have been many, many nights when I've been out in a dress / t shirt on a summer's night.

The mean maximum temp for Sydney & Melbourne over JAN is virtually the same
25.9

The mean rainfall in mm is quite different for Jan: Sydney 102mm; Melbourne 47.6

Yes, Victoria has recorded significantly declining rainfall since late 1996. Melbourne has not exceeded it's average annual rainfall of 648mm since 1996! The fact that the last few years recording under 500mm is a big concern indeed, don't think I've seen seen an occasion where successive annual rainfalls of <470 mm has been recorded over 4 years!.

1996: 777
1997: 359
1998: 585
1999: 610
2000: 629
2001: 605
2002: 396
2003: 493
2004: 622
2005: 590
2006: 438
2007: 448
2008: 449
2009: 464

There's also been marked increases where Melbourne's summer maximums has exceeded that of Sydney by considerable margins. More to follow later.

If SAB could wave a magic wand, he'd make Melbourne into Phoenix. Stuff the farmers and our dams!

If I could wave a magic wand, I'd make Melbourne's clime like this:
BBC - Weather Centre - World Weather - Average Conditions - Suva
Then it'd be "...Bye, bye cold and bye, bye drought..."
