Sydney is more expensive because there is higher demand. It's one of the simplest of economic models.

We can go on all day about which city is better, in the end it is up to preference. Also, people that are too ugly and that can't afford to live in Sydney have to unfortunately opt for Melbourne.

If you want nice warm summers, sunshine and generally good weather year round, Sydney and the Gold Coast are far, far superior to Melbourne.

Melbourne start everything when you look at the facts, Melbourne was elected the Australian capital in 1901, (the first federal capital in Australia), Melbourne had the first stock exchange, and Melbourne has the royal mint,

Melbourne had more people than Sydney in the early and late 1800's, as well as the early, mid and the 1980's!

Melbourne has a premier one year before Sydney, Melbourne had a Police Force nine years before Sydney.

And Melbourne has been growing the tram system, Melbourne now has the world's largest tram network.

Melbourne was the fashion capital before, but Sydney took over, however, Melbourne took over again in 2008, Melbourne also has Australia's largest shopping centre, at chadstone!

If you wanna know more, or if you want me to send you Melbourne's National profile, which shows what was invented in Melbourne, the lifestyle, all the companies that are based in Melbourne and so on, send me an email at ashley@mylivingcity.com

That is why it is more expensive, people are willing to pay more to live in Sydney because the lifestyle is better.

Melbourne is cold and the beaches are poor, none of the city beaches are open to the ocean.

As a World City, Sydney is rated on the same level as Tokyo.
Global city - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The status has been rated based on many factors, including cultural, political and financial influence.
Sydney not only has a higher population but also a larger economy, with more corporate head quarters being located in Sydney.

Sydney has countless nightlife districts, including Kings Cross, Darlinghurst, Paddington, Surry Hills, Darling Harbour, Martin Place, Newtown, Leichhardt. Melbourne doesn't even come close in terms of nightclubs.

Alcohol licensing laws have changed recently, which has led to a plethora of new bar openings.

Sydney has a much larger multicultural community and that is why it also has a larger range of restaurants and eateries. Melbourne doesn't even have half the sushi trains that can be located in Sydney.

Because there is a larger international community living in Sydney, there is also more cultural events. Sydney is known for it's many food, wine and music festivals.

Sydney has been voted as the best in the World countless times by tourists and travellers.

Sydney is world's best city - again - Travel - smh.com.au
Sydney voted world's best city | Herald Sun

Frankly I'm sick of Sydney haters!!! Why is it necessary for most melbournians to express there disdain about Sydney, when most Sydneysiders hardly feel the need to do the same about melbourne.

The Melbourne-Sydney thing started in 1901 when Melbourne was elected the Australian capital, and it was Sydney that started it!

And you wanna know why it's so expensive in Sydney, it's because the NSW Government are in debt, and that debt is getting much larger,

The NSW Government spend billions trying to promote Sydney, while Melbourne spends money on building and upgrading schools and hospitals,

And because of that, Melbourne has Australia's best school and health system, Victorian schools provide 1 computer per child while New South Wales Schools provide 1 computer for every 4 kids!

And Melbourne's hospital system was rated as the best in Australia and one of the best in the world, the Royal Children's Hospital in Melbourne was rated as being the world's most advanced hospital, not children's hospital but the most advanced in the world. - Melbourne has a higher standard in health and schools.

What about IT, Internet, and technology:
Melbourne has Australia's fastest internet speed at 100mbps while Sydney has 30mbps, Telstra upgraded Melbourne's speed in early 2009 and in 2010, there upgrading Melbourne's speed to 200mbps.

But Sydney still have 30mbps with the rest of Australia.

Melbourne's public transport ticket system is one fully integrated system, which is a SmartCard, it is fully integrated with all modes of transport in the State of Victoria, Train, Tram, Bus, Town buses, country and interstate buses, as well as interstate trains heading in or out of Victoria, (Myki).
Sydney hasn't got an integrated transport ticket system, Sydney users a 16 year old ticket system, and the tickets are paper!

Melbourne has the world's largest tram network,
Every train in Melbourne has Air Con, while 90% of all Sydney train's don't have Air Con,

Melbourne is the fashion capital of Australia,
Melbourne is the IT capital of Australia.
Melbourne is the Sports capital of the world.
Melbourne is the Cultural capital of Australia.

as off 2009, it was recorded that Melbourne has more office space than Sydney,

Melbourne also has much more cafes, bars and Restaurants, Melbourne also has landways, which Sydney doesn't have!

Melbourne also has bars hidden in lanes way, and there is over 120 Restaurants, bars, and cafes at Victoria Harbour Melbourne, including Australia's only Olympic Ice training centre with 2 Olympic size ice skating rinks, there is also the Southern Star,

Melbourne has Australia's largest shopping centre at 550 stores.
Melbourne has Australia's tallest building at 95 levels, and 6 of the top 10 tallest in the country.

Melbourne has plans to run the public transport system 24 hours a day, 7 days per week, train, tram and bus,

Melbourne has developed, the Victorian Transport Plan, Melbourne@5Million Plan, Melbourne 2020 Plan, the Health and Schools plan which will change Victoria.

Melbourne was also rated as the world's 2nd most livable city, Sydney wasn't even in the top 10,

Melbourne was also rated in the top 5 future global cities, and Sydney was no where to be seen!

So, Melbourne has a much better lifestyle and everything is in Melbourne, in Melbourne, you pay less and get more, in Sydney, you pay more and get less, most Sydney streets don't even have foot paths, North Ride, Merrylands, Wentworthvills, westmead and so on. also, Melbourne was rated as being the safest city in Australia and one of the safest in the world by world standards!

All 3 are fine, the Gold Coast remains the most affordable as there still are waterfront properties available for less than $1million, this would get you a small terrace house in some Sydney suburbs.
If you could live in an area of the Gold Coast like Rainbow Bay then go for it.
I'm biased towards and would never live anywhere in Australia other than Sydney but concede that Melbourne has it's plusses as well.
If public transport is important and you hate traffic then many areas of Sydney shouidn't be given any consideration.

Melbourne has Australia's largest transport network, the State Rail network of Victoria is 4129km long, the Melbourne tram network is just over 400km long making it the largest in the world.

Melbourne streets are also wide, in this order:

Car lanes: 4
Tram lanes: 2
Super Trams Stops (Size of 1 car lane): 2
Totol is: 8.

However, Melbourne is at this time the cheapest in Australia, it really depends on how much the State Government is in debt, Victoria isn't in debt at this time, however, Melbourne has many things, such as, lanes ways with cafes and bars and so on!

Melbourne also has trams on every street in the city and some suburbs, Melbourne also has a 24 hour public bike hire system with 50 bike station, 600 bikes and 4 hour access, Melbourne is the only city to have a bike hire system in Australia!

Melbourne has the MCG which is known worldwide, it hosted the first Olympic Games in Australia, in 1956, and the 2006 Commonwealth Games!
Melbourne also hosted the 1981 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. the 2006 G20 Ministerial Meeting, as well as World Economic Forum,

Melbourne was also elected as the Australian capital in 1901 before transferring to Canberra 30 years after!

Melbourne is certainly the best city in Australia in most ways, the only department it lacks in is weather (and perhaps public transport).
