Who should be the hero then........... Neil Bonnet or Adam Petty when they died? They were wearing NASCAR mandatory safety equipment when they died and were not even racing, they died at practice.

Neil Bonnet wasn't wearing doodly...nobody did back then. The HANS and softer barriers might have saved Adam Petty. The kid's throttle stuck wide open and he went into the wall and died from massive head injuries. Spectators said his head actually came out the driver's side window and made contact with the wall. He died before Earnhardt so there were few mandatory safety requirements for the drivers. Definitely not the HANS...it did not become a requirement until about four years after Earnhardt died.
