Chase Austin is set to make history on two fronts today, working to qualify for Friday’s 2011 Freedom 100 at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

If Austin qualifies he would become the first African American to start a Freestone Indy Lights race, and the first to race for the team assembled by Willy T. Ribbs, the first African-American to qualify and compete in the Indianapolis 500.

Good for him,
but nothing amazing for anybody that saw british Lewis Hamilton from England win the 2008 Formula 1 championship (youngest one ever at 23)

This guy may have been the first Black American to run Indy Lights but he's not the first Black American to run at the Indianapolis Motir Speedway Willy T. Ribbs actually ran in the Indianpolis 500 in 1991.

In 2002 the first minority owned car team, 310 Racing competed in the Indianapolis 500 with a Black American driver named George Mack. He finished 17th in that race. They competed for the entire schedule of the 2002 season and ended up 16th in points.

I'm a HUGE Lewis Hamilton fan. He is one of the best drivers in Formula 1 and he's the type of guy that will work to get the most out of his car.
