Charlotte is too busy for me, I live in Sanford. I go to Rockingham, VIR, Martinsville, Bristol, Dover, Darlington, Talladega. I plan on going to Atlanta, Watkins Glen and I'd like to go to Daytona one time to see Jeff race in the 500. I dropped my Charlotte tix years ago. I think North Wilksboro is having some kind of racin again these days? I guess I'm trying to say is that there are a LOT of tracks within an easy drive of me so it's a good place to live.

If your going to Watkins Glen better plan on camping at the track. There are not many hotels near that track and the ones that are are booked up for years.
WGI is on a two lane country road and all the roads feeding that are two lane country roads.

Aside from that WGI is my favorite track to drive, to watch not too much.

Daytona should be the place, however there are so many other sports venues in Orlando, Tampa Bay, and Jacksonville areas that it is difficult to keep this region focused on just one sport. Would have to agree that there is a large fan base and most attention centered on NASCAR in Charlotte.
