In order to attract it's new legion of fans more familiar with video games than actual racing .NASCAR has decided that at Daytona all racing will be done by two car teams running in tandem.

Those of us who are more accustomed to real racing where the best single car can advance without it's tandem partner will have to wait until after Daytona for the real season to start.

Those of you who prefer restrictor plate racing are getting what you like. Instead of one 800 HP car running up front now you need two 400hp cars lined up to run up front.

It's no wonder the stands are not full the real fans are staying home.

Looks like I'll wait for Darlington to attend my first race this season.

The plates have been around for 25 years now and they're not going anywhere. Anybody who thinks the races were always better without the plate is kidding themselves. Go back and look at the race results from Daytona and Talladega from 1970-1987. You'll be surprised by the number of races where only 3 or 4 cars were on the lead lap at the end. THAT is boring.

1977 Daytona 500 - 2 cars on the lead lap
1980 Daytona 500 - 2 cars on the lead lap
1981 Daytona 500 - 5 cars on the lead lap
1982 Daytona 500 - 3 cars on the lead lap
1987 Daytona 500 - 11 cars on the lead lap

In every one of those races listed the fastest car won the race by himself. not pushed from behind like last night's winner.

Any single car team might just as well pull in after the pace lap because you ain't going anyplace running 20 MPH slower than the tandem teams.

I know today's young fan wants to see "the big one" and that's just what you get with plate racing and if that's what you want then you are not a real race fan.

Please explain how running 200+ MPH with a restrictor is slowing the cars down for "safety reasons"

They "may" have won the race by theirself, but I'm with bluscreen- boring.
Additionally, the cars did draft back then but it wasn't as crucial as today. Drafting allowed teams to essentially blow the competition away with results as bluescreen posted. And while a single car team may not stand a chance (according to you) with the race teams today, an underfunded team may as well have done the same back then.

Well, even though I think it will be crap, I'll find myself tuning in to the 500 next week. It's a tradition here since we've seen every one since 79'.

But I am not thrilled about watching 500 miles of partner dancing on the sweet new race surface.

Oh well, at least racing season is back.

I will admit that I am a little jarred by the two-step. There is the potential for a repeat of the 2000 Daytona 500 where nobody gets out of line and they run single file all day. The car tweaks are partly to blame but I think the new surface is the biggest factor.

If they didn't have a plate they'd be going 240mph. I wouldn't be surprised if NASCAR shrinks the plate size this week before the duels.

If there weren't any plates the chances of a James Finch winning Talladega with Brad Keselowski drops to zero.

You make a good point here about even with the restricter plates those cars were going over 200 mph--and yes the Bud Shootout was B-O-R-I-N-G!!!! You are making some good points PDD and I perosnally don't see the fan base growing with races like this. It was like watching a train going around in circles. Ho-hum. More changes the worse it gets.

The way the cars were all paired off last night kind of reminded me of those novelty races they do at the local tracks where they have the cars tow campers, boats, etc.
