I may not get a lot of responses before the race starts today, but what do you feel about Danica and possibly even Jeff start and park the duals?
For one, I think the duals are a waste of time. If you are not on the front row for the Daytona 500, then it doesn't really matter where you start. Technically the pole is only a "glory" position. It's been years since someone has won the 500 from the pole.
Second, if Danica would be involved in a wreck today, she will have to start from the back in a backup car. So all that Nascar is gleaning from Danica being on the pole would be for nothing. (Sure she could blow an engine in practice, but it's a fair long shot...a wreck is more certain).
If she doesn't learn how these cars drive in the draft, how will she ever learn? I say let her take here chances just like everybody else.
If she starts and parks she will be at a disadvantage in the 500. She may have qualified first but she is not a proven NASCAR Sprint Cup driver yet.
Rickey Stenhouse may be the only driver out there besides Stuart that will give here a brake, the others could care less.
Nobody is going to be holding the door for Danica.
time on the track is never a waste of time, especially in a competition setting. true for danica and jeff the races mean nothing as they are locked into their positions come raceday, but remember a few things;
1: the cars are new this year, so everyone needs to learn how the cars react in the draft.
2: even if they were using the old cars, you still want the track time as you can determine what the car is doing under certain conditions, so that when the race is over you can make adjustments to fine tune the race car for race day.
3: danica and the rookies especially need the time with the cars at this level to gain experience on the track. seat time for every driver is always good to have, regardless of their experience.
Yeah this has never made any sense. They set the front row then make them race with desperate driving trying to get into the show, and then penalize them if something silly happens. (like drive anywhere near Denny or Tony hehe) If Nascar had any sense at all they'd make the front set no matter what. It looks dumb when the pole winner starts at the back of the field.
To the OP, I think she did exactly what she needed to do, ride around and save the car.
