Just for Daytona I would put somebody in who does not currently have a ride but has shown pretty good results in restrictor plate racing.

That would be David Gilliland. He is not affiliated with a major player in any brand. This would not cause any disruption to any drivers who just signed with new teams.

He has shown the ability to run up front in a lower financed team and he might just do well in a Hendrick car. Yes Stewart Haas are Hendricks cars just with different decals.

I didn't realize Smith had a ride for 2016. So yes, hes not going in there. Gilliland, a good possibility!

Who is available, though?

I haven't heard anything about Hornisch.. He'd be a possibility. I don't think they could pull Mark Martin back in, and having been out 3 years.. Don't think it'd be a good idea.

I'd say my first guess would be Ty Dillon.. But, would they even clear him to race at Daytona? Which would then fall back to Elliott Sadler being most likely.
Last update is he will be out until May, but his website contradicts that info. As a Stewart fan he might want to put off retirement until 2017 or ditch the fanfare for 2016 and go out quietly as many others have done. IMO, with a new crew chief there is a slim chance he will be very competitive and missing the rumored 4 months would do him no favors.

Yeah I found that out online. He will miss the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season as 2016 will be his last in NASCAR.

Yeah. Regan is in a Dodge for Tommy Baldwin, so.. No chance there. Were he still driving for JR Motorsports, I'd agree with you.

Gilliland has no Chevy connection. So far as I know, he's never driven a Chevy.. So, I think he's out due to that. Stewart-Haas is a top tier Chevy camp, so.. I think they go with an established Chevy driver.

Here's your list of available drivers..

Alex Bowman
Jeb Burton
David Gilliland
Timmy Hill
Sam Hornish Jr.
Travis Kvapil
Brett Moffitt
Brian Vickers
Josh Wise
J.J. Yeley

I don't see a name on that list they'd put in outside of perhaps Hornish. Vickers would be a possibility, but.. I think he's basically retired due to the health issues.

Sponsorship has been sold on the #15 with Clint as the driver. If they pulled him from that car, 5 Hour Energy and others would have a fit. As I suspect Bass Pro and others would have if their sponsorship was pulled from the 14 to make way for Bowyer and 5 Hour Energy.

So, we fall back to JR Motorsports and RCR Xfinity series drivers.

Which leaves us with Sadler, Dillon and Allgaier.

Of those... I say Sadler is the first choice, because while Childress probably would like Ty to get more seat time, they likely want him to run for RoTY next season. Sadler's an established driver, a winner and a pretty good fill in for the sponsors (Bass Pro).

Dillon also has a part time cup schedule already, and.. I guess my concern about him being cleared for Daytona isn't a concern, as he's already driving the #95 (formerly the 33) in the 500.

So, this boils down to.. I think it's either Sadler.. Sadler and a handful of races with Dillon.. Or a wildcard that I haven't thought of. I'd rank the wildcard about Hornish or Moffitt(there's a chance there). Never know, they might be trying to talk Ricky Rudd out of retirement(kidding).

Where are you getting your information? Regan in a Dodge? Gilliland never drove a Chevy?

Gilliland first got noticed because he was doing some winning in an independant Chevy in the Winston West series.

He also has three poles on restrictor plate tracks and pushed David Ragan to a win at Talledega in 2013.

None of your favorites has the experience in restrictor plate racing that David has.

The 7 is a Toyota.. Misspoke. It was a Dodge until they pulled out a few years back. And I still think of that car as the continuation of Bill Davis Racing, which was Dodge, because of it being owned by Tommy Baldwin.

Name a cup series car that Gilliland drove that was a Chevy. There are very, very few. His first race was in a Chevy, which was a one off and that might be the only one. He was noticed, or selected for the RYR ride because of his Busch series win at Kentucky. Of course, if that were a good reason to put someone in a cup ride, Justin Labonte would have been in one.

Sadler, honestly, is more associated with Ford as well, but I think that they'll want to put someone in the car that can drive it for the 3 or more months that Stewart will be out. Sadler is currently in a Chevy.

What difference does it make what brand is on the car? The top shelf cars are all fast and the car has no idea who is pushing on the gas or steering the thing.

BTW Sadler has never lived up to expectations in the Cup series. I like him but likability does not make a great driver.

What difference does it make to me? None.

You think Chevy will sign off on someone who drives for another manufacturer being the fill in?

I think Darrell Wallace, Jr would be a hell of a choice to fill in.. But driving a Ford on Saturday and a chevy on Sunday? Not going to fly.

Erik Jones would be a great fill in.. He did a hell of a job for Kyle and Kenseth last year.. But, he drives a Toyota.

So what difference does it make what name is on the car? A lot.
