Almirola ha a strong car but a bad pit stop and a poor restart set him back on the last green flag run. He rallied to finish 3rd.

I think it's funny that the Danica homers were furious he was her replacement, yet all he's done is wipe the floor with her statistically. In a little more than half a season he's led more laps and racked up more Top 5s and Top 10s than she had in 5 years - and he's not even a very highly-regarded driver. Kinda puts her mediocrity in perspective.

FWIW, Almirola led more laps at Chicago (70) than Danica did her entire career (64).

You think Paul Menard would still be racing if he wasn't bringing sponsorship with him?

I'm with you on Danica.. But it wasn't anything unique that she did.. The media focused on her for being a woman.. I don't really blame her that much. She had the GoDaddy dollars.. Once those went away, basically so did she.

In all of 2017, Danica Patrick had 0 top 5 and 1 top 10

NASCAR isn't dying?

At least not according to NASCAR. In a recent Forbes article NASCAR has admitted mistakes but feel that though late to the game in regards to how people watch/view sports and catering to millennials, they feel that are indeed making the right moves to pull in new viewers and fans, while still making core fans happy. They talk fondly of the "stage racing".

The article talks about catering to the female demographic in hoping that female "phenom" Hallie Deegan, 17 will replace the vacuum left by Danica.

Jeff Gordon is still pining for less mile and half's and more short tracks. Tony Stewart wants to host a cup race at his Eldora Dirt Track in Ohio.

NASCAR will take a new approach to the main sponsorship starting in 2020, disengaging from naming right title sponsors to "bundling" the sponsorship with TV networks.

Anyway, an interesting article that you should read: https://www.forbes.com/sites/maurybr.../#52c50f495e03

Menard is in his 11th full time season.

Let's look at his first 5..

2007 - 0 top 5, 0 top 10, 6 DNQ
2008 - 1 top 5, 1 top 10
2009 - 0 top 5, 0 top 10
2010 - 1 top 5, 6 top 10
2011 - 1 win, 4 top 5, 8 top 10

Danica..

2013 - 0 top 5, 1 top 10
2014 - 0 top 5, 3 top 10
2015 - 0 top 5, 2 top 10
2016 - 0 top 5, 0 top 10
2017 - 0 top 5, 1 top 10

Outside of the win.. If you showed me these two drivers based on stats alone.. While I'd say there was certainly better improvement from Menard.. I don't think either of them had the stats to stay without other factors.. The other factors being sponsorship. Cut it back to just look at the first 3 years.. You think Menard gets hired after those three years without the family money coming in?

We can argue some as well about Menards teams being somewhat crappy through his first 5 years.. His time at DEI they were spiraling down.. Then a year at Yates racing in its death.. Petty for a year, then a year at Childress.. While Danica was at a top team throughout her career.

She was nothing special outside of being female and driving a race car.. She got her ride and kept it simply due to sponsorship. But she's far from the only person to do that. I could argue right now that Almirola wouldn't be in the 10 car if he hadn't brought Smithfield. Mike Wallace years ago was tied to Geico and that was basically the reason he had a ride.

Did she deserve the chance? Yes. Did she earn the chance? Based on IRL results, I'd say yes. Based on the Nationwide results.. That's where I saw it didn't look good. Did she get too much attention for the results she had? Absolutely. But, she had the money behind her, and you can't fault her for taking the opportunity presented.

Exactly, racing is about money. It's that simple. Why Danica got so much hate for doing what virtually every other driver does is, well, obvious to motivation. Sad but not too surprising.

Those in charge of Nascar are crazy to think it's not dying. The numbers speak volumes.

I'd say that the reason for the hate is the amount of attention she received.

She certainly wasn't taking a spot from someone. GoDaddy wasn't sponsoring someone else, there wouldn't have been a Nature's Bakery coming in without her (Not that them not coming in would have been a bad thing with how it turned out).. Aspen Dental would have put their inventory with one of the other SHR drivers, perhaps Kurt Busch. If she hadn't come in, there just wouldn't have been a 10 car. SHR would have been a 3 car team.

Of course, half the massive attention she received was due to the number of times she wrecked. But, in all honesty.. I don't even recall her wrecks having a major effect on races. I'm sure it did a time or two, but she seemed to wreck often, but early.. And since she was rarely starting up front.. It didn't really even affect the races.

And.. The biggest thing.. Two that I can think of showing NASCAR is in trouble.. Cutting the field size to 40 and still not being able to fill it and not finding an entitlement sponsor. Just pulling a number here.. The 2000 Daytona 500.. 57 cars attempted to qualify.. That used to be about the average. Now, they can't even fill the field for the biggest race of the year. Much less the stands.
