This year's 500 drew a 5.1 overnight rating. Down from a 6.5 last year. Ouch. That's gonna leave a mark.

That was all on Dillion. He flat out ran over Almirola. It's one thing to pack air under a car, it's another to simply smash into another car. At that point Almirola was hanging on to his car, not blocking. It was a crap move but that's part of deal unfortunately. Give them the HP to pass and that kind of thing doesn't happen so much. Stop drivers from blocking and that happens less - the 17 was a joke out there amongst others. Nascar ain't doing either.

nascar isnt that pansy formula one, or some other series that offers up penalties during the race because someone looked at someone else cross eyed, this is real racers racing. and it has been since moonshine running was in vogue. you want to throw a block on a car behind you that has a run on you? then accept the consequences when you get spun out.

If the inside lane wasn’t open I wouldn’t have had as much of a problem with it. But after punting Almirola, Dillon goes through turns 3 with Hamlin on his tail. The room was there to make a clean attempt.

And again, if Almirola drops to the inside to block then all bets are off.

I agree. If you block expect to be turned. But is that racing? Not really. That's a poor alternative to racing. But in this case there was no block, Dillion simply smashed his way through. And what the 17 was doing all week was ridiculously bad. That stuff is hard to watch and the ratings are showing it.

Amazing how a driver change on the 10 car changed how it ran through the race, eh?
/QUOTE]

It was. I thought the 10 might win it's first race with a new driver. That would have been impressive.

I wasn't crazy about the 3's move late in the race and perhaps he gets a pass because it was the last lap... what the 17 did on lap 60 was a joke.. he took out 6 or 7 good cars... absolutely stupid... i noticed he didn't get interviewed after the race.

The ratings were likely down due to the olympics..? not sure, don't really care. All i know is the race was pretty good and the place was packed...

Really happy to see Bubba and the 43 do so well. If there were another lap, the 43 may had a chance to take the lead.

The last race run against the Olympics (2014) had a long rain delay and still scored a 5.6.
Prior to that, the 2010 race also went up against the Olympics and scored a 7.7.

Translation - the Olympics were a non-factor.

This was the lowest-rated live flag-to-flag broadcast of the Daytona 500.

Ok.. I may be mixing the timeframes up here.. But I'm pretty sure McMurray was involved in that one? Which means that the 17 just prevented McMurray from doing something stupid like that later on in the race.
