We'll be attending the Southern 500 for the first time this Labor Day weekend, and I had a question for those who have experience attending. For normal free grass parking, what’s the tailgating situation like? Will there be enough room to set up a grill and lawn chairs behind our SUV for a pre-race tailgate? Just want to make sure I’m prepared. Thanks!

It's been years since I've been.. so, I'm not going to speak to it.. But I would be surprised if there's not enough room. Remember, they used to seat far more people than are there now.

It was a rougher crowd back in the 90's when I was going to Darlington.. You cheer for the wrong person (anyone but Earnhardt) and you might have a chicken bone whiz past your head.

There is plenty of room to tailgate where you park. Almost everyone is doing that. You will have room for some chairs maybe even pop up canopy. Lot's of folks bring their cornhole boards, etc....

Since when is there free parking at a Nascar track? Been to Darlington several times and never had free parking anywhere there.

I went to several races at PIR and never paid for parking. I don't remember people setting up for tailgating in the desert parking lot, but they may have.

We always sat on the hill and setting up canopies and tents was normal. We always brought a grill and partied right there on the hillside.

From the Darlington website:

Q: How much is parking if I don't park overnight?

A: If you park just for that day's race event, parking is free.

I don't know if any of it was paid but I used to enjoy riding a motorcycle to Pocono, they'd wave you up to a parking area right behind the main grandstand.
