I'm afraid it's Jr. But, his fame will long outlast his ability. I wish he was doing better, although I'm not a real big fan of his, just to keep up with the hype.
This same conversation was had when Kyle Petty started driving. Kyle never wanted to be like his dad, he wanted to be Kyle. He said that many times in the media. It wouldn't surprise me if Dale Jr. felt the same way. I think his fans and his dad's fans that have put him on this pedestal thinking he should be as good as his dad was.
true but that doesn't mean you have to suck and waste a car, and money. If you want to blow races like Jr.... you shuldn't even be racing.. step down and let the next rookie come in. Period
Busch championships mean nothing. Randy LaJoie won BTB titles (I think) and has yet to ever do anything in Cup. His race seats are awesome though!!!
There will only ever be two Earnhardts that did anything. Ralph and Dale Sr.
The rest, Jr, Kerry and Kelly are lousy to mediocre at best. The problem is Jr has a delusional fanbase who think Jr is exactly like his dad. Too bad he will NEVER have a quarter of the success his dad did.
Jr has to be up there right now, since he has been running terribly this year in Hendrick equipment which is working just fine for his teammates (as well as Stewart and Newmann).
Jr has managed 18 SC victories in 341 races, which is a win every 5.3%. That win percentage is in the neighborhood of guys like Kenseth and Biffle, Martin and Elliott (although Martin and Elliott have far more races and wins).
So by the stats, Jr has had a good, solid career. Not as good as his popularity would signify which would make him overrated, but certainly not a complete bum in the sport either.
BTW, for comparision, Kyle Petty won 8 races in 829 career starts, good for 0.97%. The top guys in the sport, J. Johnson, J Gordon, are at 15.5% and 14.5% respectively, with the next tier right around 9%-10% consisting of Stewart, Edwards, and Kyle Busch.
