They've trademarked the Chevy/Chevrolet logo and I'd be shocked if they hadn't trademarked the term "Chevy" itself. Regardless, no one else could slap that name on a car and sell it, at least not in the US.
Maybe it has something to do with Chery Auto in China?
Its not that GM is trying to snuff out the name; its trying to be consistent with its marketing. Chevrolet is the brand and it wants that used in its PR exclusively instead of mixing it up with Chevy.
That seems to be GM thinking. I mean they are still using the same JDPowers and we are a different qauilty since they started going downhill in the 70's. Toyota and honda spoent years not just matching but exceeding the quilty to take sales. No one with any sense thinks that GM can do it overnite like they always claim. They need to not match but exceed quailty and that takes time. The real test is when word gets out o the street from owners experience that their vehcilke are better than the competition not same old sales pitch in which they admit they built crummy vehicles and put know problems for the dealers to solve.Confession maybe good for the coul but it doesn't change people minds who got screwed for years. It got so abd that i know epople who would buy from the companies that screwed them ever again. That is hard to change.

That's what I was thinking. Maybe GM found out that they don't have enough to go after Chery, so they're trying to put more emphasis on their own "Chevrolet" name.
I don't think GM has any problem with Chevy's being called Chevy's. I'm pretty sure Howie Long calls them Chevy's in the commercials.
GM's big effort in China (and a relative success) is Buick. Even if they wanted to introduce Chevy there in a big way, the use of "only Chevrolet" could have been mandated by corporate for that market only.
In the US, to paraphrase Don McLean, Chevy is about as American as apple pie.
chevy or chevrolet... Polish a turd it's still a turd.
