Wondering what the servo is, what it does and if I should upgrade mine...the trans in question is in a 1987 Buick Grand National and is presumed to be stock.
The servo's job is to clamp the bands down on their drum. It's an upgrade that should prove a snappier shift than before. This improves band life and allows the system to hold up to more torque at the expense shifting comfort. If you are doing other performance upgrades you may as well do that one.
On the car in question, the trans is believed to be stock, it doesn't have a shift kit that I am aware of. Not sure on the 200-4R's but I know on TH350's usually when a shift kit has been installed the shifts are snappy.
However the engine has been modified some and while there's no dyno numbers or track times, the boost has been raised to 25 lbs and has the ability to get the car out of it's own way and then some.
So before going to the track the big debate is if a shift kit should be installed or not....there's a place online that sells a shift kit with a new servo for $259 for thus unit...although this particular trans did some from the factory with a bigger servo than other 200-4R's.

Well if it's going to be doing a lot of work at the track you might want to do this upgrade kit as more of a precaution than anything else. Generally speaking, the shift kits mechanically "reprogram" the valve body to achieve the quick shifts. Slushy shifts eat up clutch packs and bands... especially if you're really juicing the system. Its a pretty easy install and may save you money down the road.
