Why are there so few choices in 5 door cars in the US? They seem more popular in other countries than here. The two I'm looking at now are the Mazda3 and Mazda6 but there aren't many dealers in my area selling these. Of course I'm also looking for an older model 2003-2005 since I'm a new driver and don't want the latest and greatest car.

Anyone own a 5 door car (4 door hatchback) they can recommend?

Thanks!

I've driven a mazda3 many times and liked it. It's one of the better cars in its category. You're right though, there aren't as many hatches sold here as in other countries.

You could also check out the vibe/matrix twins, maybe the golf/rabbit, and the current elantra has a 5dr version. The Honda fit is slightly smaller than these but is said to be quite versatile. The Subaru impreza has a 5dr hatch currently and a 5dr wagon in previous generations.

You could probably go to cars.com and edmunds, and search by bodystyle if you want more options

How about the Suzuki Aerio? Pretty well built, low resale value, looks like nothing else on the road. I'd say the Vibe as well, but resale values are very high for a domestic nameplate. A Scion xA or xB would be worth a look, too.

Thanks guys, wonder why so many manufacturers can't make decent looking 5 door cars. The only one that appeal to me aesthetically so far is the Mazda3 Hatchback.

Of course, if I didn't have to worry about putting in a carseat (hence get a 5 door car) I would definitely go with the Alfa Romeo MiTo. Now for a hatchback, THAT is a thing of beauty.

Since we're adding non-US models, how about a SEAT Leon (Spanish VW Golf) or a Lancia Delta? BMW has a 1-Series 5 door...I saw it in a video game, Gran Turismo 4, I think.

How about the 2012 Ford Focus (goes on sale early 2011 in the US)? Looks good to me!
