Toyota Rav 4 V6 4WD. Plenty of power, lots of cargo room, and excellent traction (with the right tires, of course).

we have had good luck with Ford Escapes, our old one was a 2003, put well over 100k miles on it before we traded it in for an 2010. The 2003 had a switch to engage 4x4, the newer models are AWD. For what it worth, besides one of the coils needing to be replaced, and shocks, the 03 never gave us any issues besides normal maintenance (oil, brakes, tranny flushes, battery, tires, 1 tune up, etc) Everything else was original, exhaust, alternator, rear differential, i don't think even any of the lignts needed changes. A great little truck which got my wife through 8 Connecticut winters.
