Do not judge the value of a car by the amount of miles it has. The car with less miles could be driven under harsh conditions, stop and go traffic, handled like a race car with sudden starts (gunning the engine) and stops, lack of periodic maintenance and for all you know have been in an accident and totaled by the insurance company.

My suggestion is prior to actual purchase take the car to an independent (remember, independent) mechanic and have him/her check the operating condition of the car. Alternatively, if purchased from a reputable car dealership have them provide you with evidence of maintenance and a warranty (usually 12K miles or 12 months, whichever comes first).

Don't forget - a bigger car usually consumes more of everything (repairs, maintenance) including gas! Good Luck!

Maybe it will consume more gas...but are you saying small cars are cheaper to fix and maintain?

Grammar aside:

You're looking at two ten year old autos with extremely low mileage. I think both are a good buys but if you want my personal opinion....the Toyota is a better overall value.

Well, you tell me - take a 4 cylinder car in for a tune-up, oil change and exhaust system replacement (salt and exhaust systems don't mix in the northeast). Four spark plugs, 4 quarts of oil and one muffler plus 8 feet of pipe later, plus 2 hours of labor.

Now, take an 8 cylinder car in for the same job - 8 plugs, 5 quarts of oil, two mufflers (check out those cars on the road with a muffler on each side of the back-end) plus 10 feet of pipe, plus 3 hours of labor.

Bigger means "more" of everything, parts, labor and $@!&^.

Which is cheaper, all things being equal? That doesn't mean smaller is cheaper - BMW, Benz, Audi, VW, Acura, and other higher end manufacturers are known to charge an "arm and leg" for parts - forget about labor.

Something doesn't sound right. Two ten year old cars that were driven approximately ONE thousand miles a year? Let me guess, both were owned by little old ladies who only drove to church and the local grocery store once a week. That little amount of driving, if true, is not very good for a car either in the long run. I would look a little deeper into those cars before pulling the trigger on either.

The real issue is not mileage but age.......seals and hoses will begin to fail shortly.... mainly due to age, not use. I would be concerned with the low mileage too? Seems too low.
