The factory warranty of many premium cars provide loaner vehicles for warranty work. That is part of the premium brand ownership experience.

But most mainstream vehicle warrantees do not provide them.

A dealer could do this - but I don't think most of them are in the habit of eating the cost of a rental car for a small warranty repair. I don't believe this has changed much over the years.

The reimbursement of rental/loaner cars is manufacturer specific. In Ford's case, they do not reimburse for rental claims unless you purchase one of the extended warranty plans that includes it.

From the Ford warranty book:

Quote:

Ford and your dealer are not responsible for any time or income that
you lose, any inconvenience you might be caused, the loss of your
transportation or use of your vehicle, the cost of rental vehicles, fuel,
telephone, travel, meals, or lodging, the loss of personal or commercial
property, the loss of revenue, or for any other incidental or
consequential damages you may have.

FWIW GM and Chrysler work the same way, but GM includes rental/loaner on Cadillac and Buick. Toyota also does not provide rental cars under it's base warranty. The irony is that all of them offer rental reimbursement under the CPO warranties.

Now, with that said, there are a lot of dealers who believe in taking care of their customers. Many of them operate loaner fleets or have an onsite rental agency that they reimburse for while repairs are being done. While this is the "right" way to do things, many dealers have cut back on this service as an unnecessary expense. If you want this piece of mind you should stick with premium cars or companies that offer this service as part of the base warranty, like Subaru.

My BMW has been in the shop for 5 months with very little work on it. It broke down half a month after buying it and we didn’t get a rental car either. Can we do something or is it okay they do that?

Find a different dealer. Even if the brand doesn't provide them, individual dealers often will as a market differentiatior.

My Porsche dealer has only new Porsche loaners, but only so many. So when you setup an appointment you’re told if they’ll have one or not. I was also told last week that if someone’s car breaks down and towed in (Porsche NA pays for the towing to nearest dealer) and they don’t have a loaner, they’ll give them a car for sale. Porsche pays the dealers for the depreciation while a new car is used as a loaner. Then the dealer sells the loaner with around 2-5k miles on it with full warranty.

Was it bought as a new model? If so, I don’t believe you.

Yup, my local Ford dealer provides loaners even though Ford doesn't require them to.

This is a decision that each dealer makes on his own. Some manufacturers will have some kind of program, but the cost will be buried in the price of the car when it is sold.

I knew one dealer that rented out his used cars, others would have a working relationship with a rental agency like Enterprise.
