The Honda CRV or a Civic.

LOL, I doubt it. Wranglers hold their value incredibly well, so one on the market for $3,000 is going to be beat to death.

And yes, I do suspect that was the point that you were getting at

$3,000 budget for a vehicle--what would you get?
I love my manual transmission Honda Civic hatchbacks. I've done many awesome long road trips in the 1992-95 style ones. For $3K, I'd be tempted to buy a 2002 Honda Civic Si hatchback. For me, it's about the reliability AND... how it handles on a twisting country road.

I will second his suggestion. I would go with the 90's Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L. Parts are cheap and they are easy to repair. The 4.0L has plenty of power and it can tow pretty well.

The CRV (in my humble less popular opinion) is the best of your list, however, finding one under 3 grand that's not wrecked would be near impossible. We've had 2 of them and in ten years never even one trip to the mechanic. No joke.

That Escape is certainly worth a look. It may have been for sale for some time as there are no leaves on the trees in the pics. Good luck!

I definitely think Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute is your best bet. They don't hold their resale value well, so you can find nice examples for $3000.

You should include Suzuki in your search. Try going to cars.com and do a search for your area based upon your price range and type of vehicle.
