another fun little suv is the jeep YJ and TJ as long as you get the hardtop they are a blast in summer crusing with the top off and will go anywhere in winter with proper tires
I love my manual transmission Honda Civic hatchbacks. I've done many awesome long road trips in the 1992-95 style ones. For $3K, I'd be tempted to buy a 2002 Honda Civic Si hatchback. For me, it's about the reliability AND... how it handles on a twisting country road.
Jeep 4.0 Grand Cherokee. Pretty much indestructable, and like old Toyota 4Runners, probably outlast us all (though Toyotas may rust into the grouond sooner than the Jeeps...).
Great community support, tens of thousands of enthusiasts to help with them, huge aftermarket and part availability everywhere.
I will second his suggestion. I would go with the 90's Jeep Cherokee with the 4.0L. Parts are cheap and they are easy to repair. The 4.0L has plenty of power and it can tow pretty well.
The CRV (in my humble less popular opinion) is the best of your list, however, finding one under 3 grand that's not wrecked would be near impossible. We've had 2 of them and in ten years never even one trip to the mechanic. No joke.
I definitely think Ford Escape/Mercury Mariner/Mazda Tribute is your best bet. They don't hold their resale value well, so you can find nice examples for $3000.
You should include Suzuki in your search. Try going to cars.com and do a search for your area based upon your price range and type of vehicle.
