the engine is a bit dirty. how do i clean it? obviously im not gonna wash it down with a hose and mess up the electronics.

do i take it to an autoshop or is there some cleaning device they sell at auto store?

Any auto parts store will carry a engine degreaser in a spray can. Follow the directions on the can.

Depending on what car this is, a dirty engine may or may not bother a potential buyer. If you have never washed an engine before, particularly on a newer car (say new enough to have electronic fuel injection) you may just want to get a detailer to do it.

Sometimes just a good blowing off with compressed air is good enough to make it presentable.

Whatever you do, don't hit a hot engine with cold water from a hose.
