Clearly we dont need like the same amount, but we definitely need a gas as well. That is not a valid reason at all. Can you imagine giving 2000 per month only for gas? No, of course.

Im not worried by rising prices. I "commute" to work in about 10 minutes, including stoplight waiting. I fill up once every 2 weeks. I guess have fun if you have to commute further and more often.

Just bought a used Prius and getting 49.5 mpg. Touring model with leather, back up camera and more. Cost 15k and worth every penny. Gets 500+ miles per tank and even has 100 miles to find a station after low fuel indicator comes on. I really don't mind the fuel prices that much anymore because I'm getting the best mileage for the cost invested.
