If you want the big car look, forget the Fit. It's understated.

I think the Fit is the best looking car in the segment. It's interior is easily the best-looking... I dated a girl who had a manual transmission Fit, and it was a fun little car. If I was in the market for a small car like that and didn't want to go into Civic territory (Si sedans are sweet), then I'd definitely be at the Honda dealer.

And of course, Honda's reliability generally speaks for itself, but I have a 2000 S2000 that only has about 70k on it but sees frequent heavy use on canyon roads - we're talking 80 miles of lock-to-lock turns and engine revs rarely dropping below 6k - and all it's ever needed is oil, gas, and tires! Doesn't get much better than that, and although huge warranties are great, it's even better if you just never have to take it into the shop in the first place!

The Honda Fit and Ford Fiesta are probably the best cars in the segment, though they're a bit pricey for the segment (maybe 16k-18k, more if you load them up with too many features). The Fit has more space while the Fiesta handles better. But as the previous poster said, the Fit is still fun. And the reliability of the Fiesta is a bit of an unknown since it just can out.

If you just want a really cheap car, the Accent might be ok. The Fiesta and Fit are nice cars that are small and not that pricey or fancy rather just cheap cars.

Only blind people could call the FIt good looking. IT is horrendesly hopefully ugly, looking like a mini, mini-van. The front overhang is awful and like most Honda's was designed by 8 year olds who think Vin Diesel is the man in the Fast and Furious. Owners seem to think its fast as they clog up the fast lane in their 100hp mini minivan. To its credit its reliable and has good space.

The Yaris has those center gauges. No thanks.

The Versa is French.

Fiesta wins for not looking as bad as the Fit and having some nice clever options. Kia Forte is nice too.

Wow, did Honda steal your girlfriend in high school or back over your puppy when you were a kid or something? Haha. So much hate...

This is true. I dated a girl who had a Yaris and rented an Echo maybe 5-6 years ago, and it was awful having to look to the right and down to see how fast I was going...

The Versa is French.
It's assembled in Mexico from mostly-Japanese parts and is built on the Nissan "B" platform, which was co-developed with Renault but is hardly "French."

...and even if it was, so what?

My gripe with it is that it's wicked, wicked ugly.

The Fiesta was designed and developed by Ford's EU division and is made in Mexico... and it looks reasonably similar the Fit in hatchback form, just with more creases on the body, and the sedan looks like butt from the B-pillar back... what are the clever options you're talking about? I was looking on Edmunds and only saw the convenience package, which gives it power options and keyless entry.

I don't think it's as ugly as you think it is, but also I didn't buy it for its looks! Never would have chosen the Fit for that. What matters more to me is what it's like to be in it. It is a great car to drive--very comfortable, does not feel "cheap" at all, damn nice handling and sound system (I got the Sport). It has electronic stability control and ABS, and a lot more ... with Honda's name, so you can expect it all to be reliable.

The Fit is not what it looks like from the outside. It's actually heavier than it looks, over 2500 pounds, but with gas mileage that's really good. There's plenty of room inside, and I like the way you can change the interior space so you can get pretty big things in it.

The cruise control is very tight--what I mean is, it varies less than a mile an hour even if you're going up and down hills (though it will go faster on a steep downhill, but only because it's coasting that fast). The engine is really smooth, and at idle it's easy to forget the engine is running. It doesn't feel like a small car, and it's not cheap in quality and driving comfort, but yeah ... it is not a great looking car, I agree

For 17K, the Hyundai Elantra is pretty tough to beat, having replaced the Civic as the industry standard among compacts in some circles.

I have had a car with center guages, and I really liked it. It took a bit to get used to, but was actually easier to see and read

Toyota Corolla. Just as good gas mileage as the yaris (that others suggested) and you get more car for a little more money. It's now almost the same size as my 2001 Camry. I'm considering one myself as I think the new camry's are too big.
