When it comes to modern Crossovers and SUV, which setup is more useful, having 3 in the 2nd row or 3rd row?
I know having 2 in the 2nd row gives easier access to the 3rd row, but some folks are not comfortable sitting in the cramped 3rd row, prefer being next to an infant that is seated in the middle, or like being so close to the rear of the car.
But for overall comfort for all, which seems to be more comfortable or practical?

I bought a 2017 Ford Explorer for the room. I have no need for 3rd row seating and it has never been up as I store all my golf equipment in the rear. If I had to do it over again, I would have two captain chairs ($600 extra) rather then seating for 3 as the 2nd row. Effectively making it a 4 passenger vehicle which is fine with me.
2-3-2 seating has worked well for me. I've got a 2010 Mazda CX-9, and I have 5 in the car more often than I would have guessed, and almost never have that 3rd-row up. In fact sometimes I've got the back packed with stuff and 3 people in the second row. So I love having the option to carry 5 people without having to dink around with the 3rd row.
My 3rd-row seating is for rare instances where I need to take 6 or 7 people. But it's also a bit difficult to get in and out of that back row in my car, so maybe 2-2-3 wouldn't be as bad if it were easy to get back there. But again, I like having space in the rear to, which would be lost having the 3rd row up.

Same here. We have 5 people or fewer in the vehicle more often than not, so 2-3-2 is more convenient. If we had another kid, 2-2-3 would probably be better (although at that point we would probably just get a minivan).
All of that works great if you 5'5" and 100 pounds soaking wet. With exception to my wife and Mom, every person in my household and family that would ride with me is 6' or taller, myself included. If we go somewhere, just the 4 of us, my wife drives, my oldest, who is 6'5" sits behind her since she can move the seat up a good bit, my youngest who is as tall as me, 6'2" sits behind me. IF by chance my Mom, or any other family member goes somewhere with us, we usually take 2 cars sincethe back seat of the Enclave offers no leg room if my kids are with us. I mean no leg room except for maybe 3". I rented a Yukon last year, the big one, and it was pretty much the same way. Within the next year or so, the Enclave will be moved to work duty for my wife, and provided we can find a minivan we like, we will be going back to one, if it meets our needs.

This is one reason why so many are buying a pickup truck. The F150 Supercrew, for example, with split bench front seat will seat 6 very comfortably, with an amazing amount of legroom and width for 3 adults in the back seat.

I have a truck, but not a Ford, and wouldnt want to take my family on vacation it in. I tried that 3 years ago, and had 5 people complaining because they couldnt take a nap because the seats wouldnt recline enough. (Yea, I know, my family is spoiled!) Not to mention the seat belt latches are ridiculously out of place in this trucks back seat. The center one would hold a car seat fine, and my scrawny little sister, but no one else in my family could sit there and not be sitting on the latch, and no we are not fat!
Drove a Suburban for years. Love having the bench seat for the second row.
