I've had some cars that got in the single digits for mpg, but I wouldn't consider them the worst ones, because I didn't buy them expecting great gas mileage.
Worst for me was a 3.7L Jeep Liberty Limited. For a 3.7L engine, only 2wd, and being a pretty small SUV, it was pathetic that it only got about 16 mpg. Comparable SUV's at the time were getting 22mpg on avg.
1975 Torino (remember Starsky & Hutch?) with a 351M big block. Awesome car but it only got about 10mpg. I also had a Mustang with a 302 Boss. I think that was measured in gallons per mile.
Recent gas hog is a 2002 Checvy full size SUV. 15mpg. Still my daily driver, at least until Spring.
A 2004 Jeep Wrangler with the 6-cylinder engine. I could never get over 13mpg. I also have a '67 Corvette and that car got BETTER mileage than the Jeep.
My 2003 Jeep Wrangler got about 14 mpg. Terrible. Ironically, it was the first year they offered it with a 4 speed auto with "overdrive" for better fuel economy.
And one of the reasons it only got maybe 4 mpg, was because of this....
It also had a 4.10 posi out back, a 3000 stall converter and no overdrive...oh and a Holley 4 bbl w/o choke....but then again I built this car for fun, not so much mpg.

You sure you aren't confusing this with big blocks....? Never heard of a sbc with a cam problem. I have heard of bbc's with it.

So they say, the old R12 systems of the 70's, 80's and up until '93, would blow frigid air from the dash vents, unlike R-134a which is what has been in use on automotive air conditioning systems since '94.
Both big block Trans Ams. Both 400CID. About 12mpg city. Both 3.42 rear axle.
