Post News, Older people are better drivers.

NEW YORK: Older drivers drive better than younger ones although the former pose a much larger risk to themselves than to others because of their poor health, says a study.

In 2001, people aged 65 years and above accounted for about 15% of all licensed drivers but caused only about seven per cent of accidents in the US, the study's researchers found.

By contrast, people aged 15 to 24 years accounted for just 13% of all licensed drivers but caused 43% of all accidents, reported the health portal News Medical.

This is all too true, and one of the reasons why the legal driving age should be raised from 16 to 18.

I realize there are plenty of bad drivers of all ages, and many 18 year olds are no better than many 16 year olds. But the difference is: at 16 you're still considered a minor, and not legally an adult. Driving is an ADULT responsibility!

There would be a little less traffic, possibly fewer accidents, and even lower insurance rates for all of us if the driving age was raised to 18. But the many parents, politicians, and childrens' rights advocates would all protest if we'd raise the legal age. They seem to forget that driving is a PRIVILEGE ... not a right.

I guess the people that did that study never met my Dad. LOL 78 yrs. old and drives likes he owns the road. I'm half afraid to ride with him anymore. He does 65 in a 35 mph zone, yells at people and doesn't like to let anyone pass him. I've been trying to get him to give up driving for a couple yrs. now but he won't. One of these days I should just take his lic. We were both tractor trailer drivers for over 30 yrs. and he knows how he should drive. He has a perfect driving record but I'm afraid thats going to end very badly if we don't get him off the road real soon.

In my yrs. of driving, and I have logged over 3 million miles, the worse drivers on the road are, #1 young girls aged 16-25. #2 coal truck drivers. #3 Greyhound bus drivers. I also agree the driving age should be raised to 18.

The highway is no place to be goofing off and trying to see how fast your car will go. We have a racing team, both my sons have drag cars. Ya wanna see how fast your car will go? Take it to the track, not the highway.
