Oil is our civilization's Achille's Heel. Take it away and/or make it too costly too quickly and everything falls down. Our only hope is for oil prices to rise slowly enough to spur alternative fuel development and buy time for said magical new technology's implementation.
Well said. The problem is, the oil price is not externally given but is a result of our demand and consumption. The more oil we use, the more expensive it becomes. The only way for lower oil prices is a lower consumption but on the other hand, a lower price again will lead to a higher consumption. Its like a loop...

Other countries have been much smarter, in raising taxes on petrol they prepared their industry and households for a raising oil price and therefore helped increasing efficiency in transport, power generation, industrial processes. For us, the shock will be much more painful.

Yeah, I've talked it over with my friends, we are going to car pool...

Today we pooled in a 66 Impala with a 409/2 4 barrels..

Tomorrow we'll pool in a 1998 Hummer

This week-end we are going to picket an organization that wants a law passed that will add a tax to cover the medical costs of bicyclists who have been hit by automobiles and have no insurance.

A 409 w/dual barrels simply MUST be driven alone.

The thing about rising oil prices is that reserves which are financially unviable to exploit at current prices will become viable at some price point. We may be running out of the "easy" oil, but we're in no immenent danger of scarcity and runaway pricing. There will be a series of plateaus as sustained prices reach a point where different difficult-to-get oil reserves can be recovered, brought to market and still turn a profit. Sure, there will be short-term volitilities due to factors like geo-political uncertainties, natural disasters, and speculative plays. And it takes time to make reserves productive so there will be some runs up in price that won't come down until the new reserves come on line. But viewed on a broader time-frame, we're in for a gradual stair-stepping of prices rather than an exponential spike. And while the developing world is demanding more oil, the "developed" economies have generally flat-lined. The U.S. has actually passed the point of peak demand and is using less.

Probably a 427. 409 was done in 65. I doubt anyone would put a 409 in a 66 when the 427 was the hotest thing around by then.

The girl that lived next door to me dated a guy with a 61 409 Impala conv. in the coolest light green color. It had a 5:17 (or close to it) diff and as a 14 year old, I'd sit on the porch and wait to hear it come up the street going through the gears. Very cool.

We can thank our stars muscle cars are coming back...

Some people (no names here) will moan & groan expousing bicycles and trains and bad mouth cars but muscle cars are fun, dependable and take me:

~ where I want to go

~ when I want to go

~ no matter what the weather is

Not only that, the engine must have been transplanted because the 409 was not available in '66. The 427 was, though.
