Why trade for a new LS? Did they change much in three model years? Everything else on that list is a step down, and for no benefit that I can see, if he's still interested in a new LS. For instance, if he was considering a CTS-V, then that's a step down in quality and refinement, but a hell of a lot more fun to drive than an LS. That's a step down that makes some sense. But the other cars on that don't offer any advantage that I can see, and all are definitely not in the same class as an LS. Witht hte LS as the current and possibly new benchmark, nothing else on that list makes sense to me.
I'd suggest that he determines what he wants in a new car, and go from there. That's probably not news to you.

I don't know why my dad picks what he does, he just gets the idea into his head and picks out vehicles that interest him regardless if it's a step up or down...I guess he figures he can always trade in again.

That said, instead of the Maxima, how about an Infiniti G37? 3.7L V6, 328hp, 19/27. If power isn't as important, the G25 offers a 2.5L V6, 218hp, 20/29.

OK, well, then off that list I'd go for the SHO. I don't need anything like the LS, and prefer RWD (or AWD in the SHO), and performance is always a consideration for my daily driver.
I've driven them all. If price is not an issue the LS 460 easily destroys the rest, its built on an entirely different level with technology and amenities galore while keeping a great ride with great seats.

The CTS is the least comfy, cramped compared to those two and sportier. Its a CAddy which appeals to old people.
The SHO is a great buy but louder and course but a hoot to drive. Tons of room inside.
The Maxima is also a great drive, the most course here but looks fantastic. Some pretty neat options too.
Id say, go out and test drive all five, and probably eliminate a couple on that basis as just not feeling comfortable. Then, assuming those still in the running are more or less equal, choose the cheapest of them .

Maybe he should include the LS600h and the Hyundai Equus. If money is no object, put the Europeans in there - S-class, 7-series, A8L/S8, Aston Martin, Maserati Quattroporte, and on a completely different level: Rolls Royce (Drophead), Bentley (get the coupe), and there is also Maybach.

... except in driving excitement. In the list, 4 of the 5 offers more of that than the Lexus. Even the Buick isn't the isolated yacht "Buick" of yore.
The big Lexus has always been about comfort and serenity ... but being tops in that doesn't mean that all other vehicles will come in short. Different strokes for different folks.

The CTS is part of Caddy's attempt to appeal to a younger crowd. Old people prefer the big plush Cadillacs, not the "least comfy, cramped" and "sportier" CTS.
It's "coarse" BTW, not "course", when used in this context. Just an FYI.
Interesting list. I would take the LS460 off, only because they already have one. Not much has changed and if they like to change things up, why buy what you already have?
The Maxima really doesn't fit on the list IMO, the other cars (yes even the Taurus) are a cut above the Maxima.
The CTS and Taurus to me are an interesting toss up. Both are the sportier option of what's listed. the Taurus has the grunt, the CTS has the moves. The Taurus is bigger. The CTS has better appointments.
The Buick is a nice choice if they are looking for something like the LS460, but not a LS460. I think it's a great car and a heck of a value, but again not much different than what they already have.
My wildcard would be the new Infiniti M, particularly the M56. It's different. It's powerful. It's sporty. It's plush. It sort of combines the characteristics of all the cars on the list into one package.
My 40 YO son just ordered a SHO but I am sure I'll have to give him a few driving lessons so he can really enjoy it.
When I get my 2012 Boss I might let him drive it. Maybe.
