So every single person who is driving a car with an automatic doesn't have "control" of their vehicle? Did you disengage the anti-lock brakes on your car so you have "more control?"
On my 3 pre-computer '60s and '70s cars (all with automatics) I frequently down (and up) shift manually.
Yeah, my '69 Cadillac had a lag in the shifts. I put in a shift kit and it now shifts instantly and firmly.
You can't power out in the corners with an automatic?
All my cars weigh over 4,000 lbs so the extra weight of an automatic isn't going to make much difference.
There is engine braking with automatics.
Are you serious? Some of the best burnouts I've seen were with cars with an automatic trans.
I didn't buy my cars for their fuel economy, so that's irrelevant for me.
We get that you prefer automatics. You don't have to go through this same schtik every single time someone expresses their preference for a manual.

Just correcting some errors and/or inaccuracies.
You don't have to whine every time I do so. Just skip right over my posts because, and this may surprise you, but others are probably interested in my posts.
Other members are posting in this thread and I will do so when I think it's appropriate. Keep it up and I'll report you for harassment.
Working in the family car business, we would have 10 automatic buyers for each manual and this was 30 years ago.
Cars with stick just languished... 68 Mustang Fastback V8 stick was there almost a year, same for the Dodge Dart with a 340 and Stick... just real hard to sell, also, manual were often the stripped down model... no power steering, brakes, air conditioning, rubber mats in place of carpet... etc.
Yet you would think on any type of high performance car, a manual would be favored. So i take it even during the muscle car years, more autos were favored over manuals?
Autos do have an advantage over manual when it comes to straight line racing.

Well, these were all trades in the 70's and there were two gasoline shortages that just about killed muscle cars then.
One guy was desperate to sell his 455 Olds Vista Cruiser Wagon that he changed the Air Cleaner Engine Decal from 455 to 350... talk about fraud.
They are not errors or inaccuracies. They are an opinion.

Probably so when you say something new and useful. I doubt anyone is interested in hearing the same thing over and over and over again.

You could just stop whining and skip right over my posts instead.
I'm with you regarding manual transmission. I assume it's just how US is; automatic transmission falls in line with the general mindset. Being a mechanical engineer and a car enthusiast, I don't want an automatic (not even the automated manual); ironically, I own a full-size truck which has an automatic while the rest of my stable is manual. I've been looking for a truck with manual transmission and that search is unending.
Where I live, in the mountains, manual transmissions are common. Specially for those of us that pull trailers. Almost everybody I know owns a manual (Truck). The last thing you need is to be pulling a trailer up a grade and the vehicle decides when it wants to shift. haha Much better control on ice/snow, much better control when you get in the muck while feeding.
But the OP is correct. The rental agencies do not have a single manual transmission vehicle. But you also have to figure that some corp office back East or down South is decided what vehicles are puchased for the agency.

Actually, no, Drover. YOU think it's merely stating a preference for a manual. If that's all it were or all it ever were, then there would be no responses like his or mine. It's about the STUPID crap that always goes along with it, from automatic drivers are lazy, you have no control over your car, or statements about what a car with an automatic WILL do or CAN'T do that can be proven to be factually incorrect.
I prefer good manuals, too. I'm going through the expense and difficulty of adapting a manual transmission to an engine that never had one behind it, in a car that came stock with a completely different automatic transmission.
BUT, every time this discussion comes up, it's the same ignorant crap about automatics time and again.

Pot, meet kettle. Seriously, listen to yourself and these threads. Same thing every...damn...time...
Oh, and let me give you a little hint about cause and effect.. this discussion is NEVER started by someone who prefers or likes automatics. You want to stop the stuff from getting repeated, stop the conversations from starting.
I prefer an automatic. I'm pretty much just looking for a way to get from point A to point B. I don't considering driving to be fun or entertainment. So I just want the least amount of hassle considering I am in traffic a fair amount of time.
I didn't realize that this actually made me lazy. Or spineless. Or some kind of degenerate. You learn something new every day.

Thank you, Merc63. Always nice to read a post from someone who is rational. When I first saw this thread, I was going to make a post saying that this topic has been done several times already. Then I decided not to post at all until the same old myths and untruths started coming up (more "control" with a manual, can't downshift an automatic, etc).

Yep. I have never started a thread about automatic transmissions. But if I see a post I wish to reply to, I will do so and there is nothing Drover can do about it. I will even post photos of my car(s) when I feel it is appropriate to do so, whether Drover likes it or not.
