Is it ever cheaper to ship stuff instead of driving it in my trunk cross country?

Is there a good way to figure out how much each lb of cargo will cost me in gas money and if it's cheaper to ship it?

If you're already making the cross-country trip, then stuff that is small enough in volume and within the weight limits of your vehicle won't cost you an incremental increase in fuel consumption that would be greater than the cost of shipping the stuff commercially.

Its cheaper to take it yourself. A friend sent some packages just a little too big to put in her car and it 600 bucks round trip to chicago. The cheapest deal she could find.
