An Impreza or Forester are probably the best choices imo for a quality car - maybe you are putting too much emphasis on a slight difference in mpg, but then again, gas is expensive.

The Mazda 3 is a good next choice, simpler car but still fun to drive. The VW are nicer but pricier. And then you get into the cute utes like the Rav4 or Ford Escape.

Technically a Toyota Prius is a hatchback. Not sure how much fun you'll have, but I hear 0-6mph is pretty intense The 2010+'s don't look too bad, IMO.

Actually, I really do think you meant to put in 0-6... Prius is a really terrible car to drive imo.

I did put 0-6.....it's a joke on most forums when Prius owners thing their car is fast.

I know you said you don't have much time to wait, but if you can hold out a few more months there will be an all new Impreza that should have ~30% better fuel economy, even though AWD is still standard. The production versions (sedan and hatch) will be shown at the New York Auto Show in a couple weeks.

What technology are they attributing to this large improvement?

I have a 2008 Prius. It's a hatchback, gets good mileage, and is very comfortable. I don't race it, but it goes every bit as fast as I ever need it to go.

I got a chuckle. That's from an old thread on Prius Chat where they started discussing the "kills" that some owners racked up against other cars in their Prius'. It quickly made the rounds of the net on all the performanc forums and started some "lively" discussions. One Prius owner defended the car by claiming its 0-6 time was faster than an Enzo...much hilarity ensued.

Here's the original thread:

Hybrid Racing stories - PriusChat Forums

Read it if you want some good laughs at the expense of some tool bags who drive Prius'.

No one single technology. An updated, more efficient, smaller-displacement boxer engine (~2 liters) and new-for-impreza CVT transmission are the two biggest factors.
