Here's the deal with my current car: a 1996 mercury sable with 137k miles on it.

It starts really badly, meaning it will crank over for about 5 seconds before finally starting. If you turn the key and "prime" the engine a few times then it will start easier, it's almost as if there isn't fuel in the lines or something after you shut it off. The other thing: it gets horrible gas mileage - something like 17.5 mostly on freeways doing the speed limit, i believe it should be getting at least 23+, granted it is a V6 engine. I've heard this could either be a fuel pressure regulator, bad spark plugs, or possibly a bad oxygen sensor. My check engine light is on but I have no idea for what...

Take it to a shop that does diagnostics. You cannot troubleshoot a car on the internet.

You want us to diagnose the issue over the internets? Really?????????? Word of advice. Asking this kind of thing on the net is trying to find a needle in 10 haystacks. Just take it to a shop that either you trust, has good reviews or recommended by someone you know.

Alright I'll go to autozone free diagnosis for check engine lights and see what they say.

I once used the innarwebz to jump start my buddy's '97 Z28 when he was down in Texas. True story.
