The Crown Vic reallt was doomed when police around the nation started more and more to go to the chrysler patrol cars as did many of the fleets for the reason;they wre offered atmuch lower cost just looking at my local police pricing on bids. Chrysler is going after the Fleet sales market pretty strongly. What I am seeing in taxis is mini vans that hold more passengers/luggage while getting better mileage.
Not surprising. We've been seeing smaller taxi's here in chicago for several years. There are a tone of Scion Xb's and toyota corollas running around. In fact Ican't tell you the last time I saw a Crown Vic Taxi.
Never seen a Corolla cab here. Seen a number of Camrys though, mostly hybrids. Even so, easily half of the city's taxi fleet still consists of Crown Vics.
NYC taxis to get suburban look, Japanese nameplate - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110503/ap_on_re_us/us_nyc_s_new_taxi - broken link)
Having been in France, the cars that are actually replacing Crown Vics, are really Renaults, rebadged as Nissans (Renault owns parts of Nissan).
Mpg goes from 12-13 to 25 by switching to these new Nissan/Renaults. I also think they look cool. Much nicer and useful than the Crown Vics they replace.
Good move for NYC taxi drivers and riders. Nissan too!!!
How sad. Looks like I won't be using a cab if I need too (which I very rarely do). Or I will ask for a Ford or Chrysler cab.
Incidentally, my '95 Lincoln Town Car, which is a few hundred pounds heavier than a Crown Vic and has the same (4.6 L) engine, has been getting 18.1 mpg with 100% street driving. When I was doing more freeway driving, it was averaging 21 mpg.

LOL! It's hilarious that someone refuses to take a taxi (one that is better than the car it replaces in terms of a taxi's needs) because it isn't American. The article actually states that 70% of Nissan's sold in America are made in America while the model that Ford submitted was made overseas.

It really is hilarious.
I doubt most people looking for a ride in a taxi would even care where the car is made, they just want to get to their destination.
Give me a good ole' Crown Vic everyday of the week and twice on Sunday.
