I've had an 84 Oldsmobile Cutlass with over 150K miles that I have driven numerous times to Michigan to Texas and back, and from Texas to Ohio and back to MI. Never missed a beat. Like the others have said as long as you keep up with the maintenance, oil changes and keeping the fluids where they supposed to be, then you should have no problems.
Why do you think many semi-cross country trucks are still running great after 400-500K miles? Regular oil and filter changes of course. No reason why cars shouldn't last beyond 200K miles. I remember that old fable that people used to say that you needed a new car after it hit 50K miles...lol.
My 1994 Civic has 380,000 miles on it and it's mostly road trip miles. Highway miles are better than city miles. And cars do better being used a lot than being parked or driven on short errands.
It's always bad for a car to be driven. Of course, it's also bad for the car to just sit there and if you're not going to drive, why bother owning one?
I have driven my little Honda from Boston to Miami and back once before and I'm planning on doing this again this summer.
Does it reduce your cars life expectancy to do this once or twice a year?
Its about a 3,200 mile(round trip) journey, that I love. I'm in college right now and I need my baby to last me at least another 5 years, my mother keeps telling me I'm going to ruin my car if I do this.
