A couple of you mentioned Fords. Every single Ford I've had over the last 20 years has the issue. That would be 5 Taurus', a Focus and 2 F150s. My daughter's Sable does it, too.

Ditto. 2003 Hyundaii Elantra here. Same problem. It was the evap canister. It was also throwing an engine emissions code so I had to get it repaired before passing emissions testing.

Are you guys saying that the Evap Canister is plugged, and has to be replaced with a new one?

I'm asking because my 2010 Mazda 3 developed this problem last year. Getting in the last 1 or so gallons of gas is almost impossible. I figured it was some sort of venting problem, but due to health issues I haven't climbed under the car as of yet to look around.

The cause is usually "topping off" the tank. When you fill to the top of the filler tube the gas drains through the vent holes into the charcoal canister where it causes the charcoal to swell. Technically, all you need to do is replace the charcoal but the bulk of the cost is the labor to remove and install the canister. There is also a evap check valve leading into the canister that may be sticking.

The so called premature clicking of the gas pump is by design as to not overfill the gas tank and have gasoline fly back out of the filler neck onto you, the car, the floor and catch on fire. It's a safety issue.

I had this issue crop up with certain gas stations when I had my Infiniti G35. Definitely annoying.

My 2014 Ford Focus developed a problem just yesterday when filling up. The pump is not clicking off when I fill up. When it happened last night, I thought it was a problem at the gas station. Then today when I filled up again, it did it again. Gas poured out of the tank all over the car and ground. Luckily not on me. I have been travelling that is why I am filling up so much. So I think this is to much of a gas station coincidence two times in a row. For it to be the gas stations causing the problem. So I don't know if a sensor is not working signaling the pump to shut off , or what the problem is. So it means yet another trip to the Ford Dealer, with a new problem with this car.
