Default best auto salesman ever

While I am unsure of the truth of this story it was related to me in 1968 when I was a still wet behind the ears auto salesman of 24 at a Sacramento, CA Ford dealership.
It seems an un-named Chevy salesman in Chicago, having moved to a studio apartment since his wife left him for a much 'better' fellow salesman, had some items he had no need or room for, among which was an old beat up chest type freezer. And though not big on brains or inititive he promised himself that HE was going to be the 'salesman of the year' the following year. After another six months of haphazard sales results, summer was coming to Chicago and that old freezer which he stored by an old building at the dealership would, no doubt stink to high heaven if it wasn't soon plugged in, so one night in June after downing several beers, "Mr Jones" came up with an idea.
That idea was good enough, along with a twenty dollar investment in ice cream in half gallon containers, to make him the top Chevy salesman, not just at his 'store', not just in Chicago or just the state, nope he was the best Chevy salesman in the whole US of A.

Now then, if no one has heard this story, there may never be a solution to this little mystery, OR WILL THERE ? What did this below average auto salesman do with an old freezer and ten gallons of ice cream to propel himself into the record books?
