I swear, I'm gonna start carrying a five million candlepower spotlight in my car and start shining it in the mirrors of left-lane barnacles who don't get the hint when there's a line of traffic behind them -- or worse yet, when traffic starts blowing by them in the right lane...
Depending on what state you live in if its actually law or not, in NC it is merely a suggestion.

Ask any Highway Patrol, they will tell you.
And to mention for those bozos who think it is thier constitutional right to drive in which lane they feel; it is dangerous to pass to the right. "Why?" you ask. The blind spot is much greater on the right. Think about that next time you're hanging out in the passing lane.

True, laws do vary state to state. BUT, it is common sense and the intent of all state laws that the left lane is for passing to allow for an orderly flow of traffic in any state or country you may be driving in. Why is it so hard for folks to just move over and let the faster traffic go?

I never thought if it in those terms, but that is a good way to sum it up for some of those dimwits.

Do you mean it is only mentioned in the driving handbook as a suggestion? Or are there black and white signs saying "Slower Traffic Keep Right," since black and white signs are the law.

Nope, the guy's right. Here's the relevant NC statute (§ 20‑146(e)):

"Notwithstanding any other provisions of this section, when appropriate signs have been posted, it shall be unlawful for any person to operate a motor vehicle over and upon the inside lane, next to the median of any dual‑lane highway at a speed less than the posted speed limit when the operation of said motor vehicle over and upon said inside lane shall impede the steady flow of traffic except when preparing for a left turn. "Appropriate signs" as used herein shall be construed as including "Slower Traffic Keep Right" or designations of similar import."

Translation: "When there are 'Slower Traffic Keep Right' signs, you're not allowed to impede orderly traffic flow if you're driving below the speed limit. But if you're driving at or above the speed limit, and/or there are no 'Slower Traffic Keep Right' signs, feel free to impede orderly traffic flow 'til your heart's content."

I'll drive the speed limit in the left-hand lane if I wish. THAT'S the law. If you don't like it, stay home.

Yet another walking, breathing illustration of why we need to stop issuing driver's licenses to anyone who shows up with a pulse and a 10-dollar bill.

Agreed. Not only is it rude, its dangerous, not only to other traffic, but to the slow dimwit in the left lane.

You should never be in the leftmost lane if you can avoid it regardless your speed. What happens if there's a problem with your car? What if there's an accident in the oncoming lane? You always want to be as far to the right, and thus as close to a safe place to stop, if needed. Cruising in the left lane not only endangers others, it endangers yourself. The last place you want to be is in the left lane median as cars go past at 50-70 mph. No one expects you to be there, and you can't get away from traffic because you've put yourself in a situation where you're trapped.
