My drivers side headlight went out, mechanic at the shop replaced it for me but told me the fuses were bad, how much does it cost to buy them from the auto parts store? I have a friend who can put them in for me

If it's a regular blade-type fuse, dirt cheap. Some of them are higher than they used to be, but still cheap.

About a buck or two, or less.

You can replace them yourself quite easily.

Fuses bad?

You may need to find the reason it/they blew out. Thay are easy and cheap to replace, most/all are color coded so it's almost idiot proof to do.

Fuses can't be "failing". The way you make it sound like they're about to broke, but not broken all the way yet. It's either they burn up or not. And they don't have short lifetime, there is usually a reason why they burn up, which would be too much current.

Fuses rarely fail, the ones in my 1992 4Runner are all original. Your owners manual will show you were they are.

You make it sound simpler than it really is. Fuses age and degrade over time. When they reach an advanced stage of deterioration, they suddenly blow. I think the Fluke Corporation even sells a digital multimeter that includes a fuse tester function. It's called the Fluke Fuse Forecaster, or some other such catchy name.
You could look it up on Google.
