When I turn the heater on in my 2007 Ford Taurus, I get a smell of antifreeze/coolant. It was stronger a few days ago, but not as strong now. I recently had problems with no air and no heat, and the car was in the shop. I then had a problem with all air coming out of the ac vents.. back to the shop. Now the coolant smell. No puddles of coolant on the ground, and nothing dripping in the passenger area. It is not overheating either. I'm thinking heater core, hoses, or even head gasket. What could be the cause of the smell?
Thanks.

Heater core, could be.
Even if there is no puddle or fog on the windows doesn't mean there isn't a leak.
Have a pressure test done on the system by the shop that recently worked on the system.
But before you drive it there, check the coolant level. (when it's cold)

Yeah, and unfortunately fairly likely the shop did something to aggravate the situation - if only topping off your coolant.

They may or may not have done anything *wrong* although they could have, could have dropped a tool on the heater core while working around it, but good luck getting them to own up to that.

They may they maybe they did. It could have developed the leak from just messed with it.
Anyway if you approach it correctly, they will in all proubely cut you a deal a better deal than if you go to someone else.

Thanks everybody for the responses. Along the lines I'm thinking. Something else, the odor is only in the car when the heater is on. No smell in the engine compartment. No visible leaks or puddles anywhere. I called the shop this afternoon and they told me to check the coolant level, but bring it in for a quick check after work. I checked the level and it was up to the Cold Full Level (it had been sitting since I got to work in the morning). I stopped by the shop after work, but there was not enough time to do anything. We decided since there were no visible leaks, and the coolant level was up, and it is not overheating, I would bring it back in the morning for a more complete check. They did mention a pressure check, so I expect that is what they start with. I have a good relationship with this shop so I don't think they will be difficult. Especially since I have had it in for heating/cooling issues the last week.

I have the same issue, excpet that i smell Coolant outside the car when the heater is not on. THere is no loss of coolant and a pressure test revealed nothing. Can only be a pinhole somewhere. I will probably replace the heater core and see what happens.
