With the coming CAFE standards, more and more manufacturers are turning away from V8 engines to turbo V6's. I can see doing this with some lesser vehicles but what about high-performance cars? I, for one, will NEVER buy a Corvette with a 6 cylinder!
Do you think in the coming years that V8's will disappear all-together from American society? I still think there's no replacement for displacement. I've heard/seen some of the turbo V6's and there just isn't a good rumble that a V8 can produce.
Whats the point of having a 400 hp V8 when the speed limit is 55-65 on most highways.?
My 4 cyl turbo goes plenty fast enough for me.. I guess a V6 is a good compromise with todays fuel prices.
I like the growl and power of a V8 and I'm not afraid to admit it. And no, I'm not overcompensating for anything else.
I also don't like when people tell me what's best for me and my driving habits. I have a co-worker who thinks that everyone should have small, low horsepower little cars, like the Fiat 500. And you know what? The Fiat 500 would probably be fine for most of my needs, but it's not what I want.

Who follows the speed limit anyway?
Because having 400+ horses beneath the hood is FUN! It's the little things in life that make it worth living.
I also have co-workers who feel anyone driving a vehicle that is bigger than a Corolla is overcompensating or backward or my favorite "a big Republican fat-cat".
Nobody ASPIRES to own a Camry or Corolla when they're young!

bahah, I have co-workers that think the same way, they always whine at me for having a supercharged Firebird, but I also have a Camry and Accord, but my Firebird is just funner to drive...and I live having fun in my car.

I also like the sound of a V-8 but I have been watching some drag racing lately and the twin turbo small blocks are running so fast that the 500+ cube NA cars just can't keep up.( I'm talking street legal not Pro Stock)
I can see one of these days the Corvette running a twin turbo v-6 and blowing away the v-8's
We all know that today's small cube V-8's blow away the 400+ cube V-8'S from the sixties so it is evolution that dictates that eventually the 6's will blow away the 8's
The V8 isn't going away. There will always be a demand for V8's for high performance cars (M5, mustang?) and can improve with the right amount of tweaking from car makers.
I don't think you'll see it disappear at all. What you will see is the current trend that has been going on for several years where V8's are relegated to only do duty in limited performance models or topline luxury cars. The kind of vehicles that are low enough in volume to not screw with the CAFE numbers.
I also think you will see a trend towards smaller displacement V8's utilizing a myriad of technologies to create the same level of horsepower, or even more. Look at the GenV GM small block. They are expecting equal or more power out of an engine with .7 liters less displacement and with a 15% MPG bump.
