What determines the '1st, 2nd, 3rd' generation of a Dodge truck? I have a 98 3500 diesel dually that I would like to sell, but have been asked the 'generation' question and have no idea what they are talking about. Thanks...
It is a classification of models built in consecutive years.
Dating back to the mid eighties when dodge introduced the "new" line of dodge trucks.
The trucks introduced then were generation 1.
When the style changed slightly, and mechanical differences were upgraded, the next generation took over.
Not sure about the rams, but with the dakota, 1st generation was the mid eighties, till 97 , when the 2nd generation took hold in 97
3RD generation for dakota was when the style changed in 2005.
The same would apply too the ram I would think.
There were 2 versions of the 5.9 Cummins in 1998, a 12 valve and a 24 valve. The 12 valve is sought after by most folks. It got fabulous fuel mileage considering. The 24 valve engine made considerably more power but at the expense of reliability and fuel mileage. If you have a 12V engine, don't give it away. They are a very long life engine and most will see 500,000 miles properly maintained. Biggest issue on your YM truck was the lift pumps but is easily fixed by using a Cummings instead of a Dodge unit.

The 98's (12v) are Golden... Most power for FREE (Great inj pumps), trouble free service...1m+ miles (I have (3) 1st gens)
Oh, yes!!! let me know if you have a ''98 quad', manual tranny w/12V without a 53 series block (Subject to cracking). I (and many others are looking for 98's)
i have the 02 3500 24 valve turbo dually, it has 200,000 trouble free miles. the real problem is that the dashboard has all but disinagrated, and its all but impossible to find hub caps. other than that, i love it.
I have a 1994 Dodge Cummins 3500 single cab dually with the P 7100 pump and automatic transmission. Under the hood it is basically bone stock. An AF E Horn, AFP intake and filter, and a 4 inch straight pipe exhaust. I am assuming this is a first generation? Only has 186,000 original miles and under the hood maintenance has been impeccable. Full synthetics used religiously and all maintenance as well. I even have the original dealer window sticker as well as the dealer repair manual. Cosmetically she needs a little bit of help, other than that she's great. I just want to be sure that it is a first or second generation. I am considering doing transmission upgrades and putting a little bit more power under the hood or possibly selling it. Needs an entire dash except for the top can anybody help?
