Dollar-Store Decadence: The Luxurious Ford LTD

above link is the 1966 Ford LTD, we had a darker blue Galaxie 500 with a 289 V8 from 1966 to 1975

what would our old Ford(@ 3700 lbs) get in terms of mpg in a Consumer Reports test of range to be expected in normal driving as well as 300 mile trip?

a 1971 Galaxie(@ 4100 lbs) got 8-18 mpg in normal driving and 14 mpg on a 300 mile trip with a 351 V8

what would you think the figures for our old '66 Galaxie, adjusting the weight and engine differences, would be?

we had a new 1975 Buick Century Regal for 13 years. It had a 350 V8 and catalytic converter, ran on unleaded fuel. It weighed about 4100 lbs

a '73 Century 350 with a 4 bbl carb tested recorded 8-16 mpg in normal driving and 13 mpg on a 300 mile trip

assuming the catalytic converter gave it somewhat better mpg's than prior years, what would you estimate the readings on the '75 would be?

Personally, i don't think the cats are gong to improve fuel economy, they're more for emissions than economy. Most of the cars would probably be in that same range, engine size, fuel delivery, and transmission/axel ratios will be some of the biggest deciding factors. 4bbl vs 2bbl vs tri-power/six pack, etc will also make a considerable difference.

I drove a '66 Custom 500 and a '66 Galaxie on several trips between Denver and San Diego in the late 1960's ... I recall stopping at Whiting Bros stations through the Southwest and filling up on regular at 18.9 cents/gallon ... and getting right at 18 mpg with both cars for the trips running at 65 mph.

What surprised me was we also had a 1964 Custom w/289, a very stripped bottom of the line car with manual windows, no A/C and manual steering (which was a beast when parallel parking) ... and it got the same fuel mileage on the identical trips. We'd expected the lighter car with the smaller engine to do better than the upline cars in that body, but didn't see it happen.

The Galaxie 500/XL was a glittering, chrome-encrusted, color-coordinated, all-vinyl palace, like some kind of halfway house for Vegas high rollers.

the article describes the Galaxie above. interesting. never thought of that and come to think of it, it did seems like it
