Are the different size batteries really interchangeable? I currently have a Group 35 battery installed (L 9 1/16" x W 6 7/8" x H 8 7/8"). What's interesting is that the Sears website also says the 26R (L 8 3/16" x W 6 13/16" x H 7 3/4") is compatible with my car. If I can get the thing to fit, what are the disadvantages of replacing my existing Group 35 battery with a new 26R, which is a smaller battery?

The 26R has less capacity. Either will work.My feeling is its always best to get the largest, heaviest battery that will fit.

Not true, you must adhere to manufacturer specs.

If your alternator does not properly charge you battery, it could mean problems such as plate sulfation and premature battery death.

The group number is physical sizeand where the terminals are placed, and either will fit that vehicle. More important to battery purchase is the cold cranking amps, if you live in a cold winter area. The cranking amps (normal temperature) are not as critical in the case of a small 4 banger.

If you can tie it down, hook up the cables, and it doesn't arc against the hood when you close it, it'll work just fine. Make sure you meet the minimum recommended CCA for your vehicle, but otherwise you're good.

I've been seeing a trend to install batteries that are physically smaller than the original sizes in many cars lately. The latest technology is yielding batteries that are smaller yet have equal or superior CCA and reserve capacity to the original larger sized cases.

As long as the battery can be secured in the battery holder, the cables reach to the terminals, and the clearance to the surrounding area is OK ... and the battery specs are equal to or exceed the OE battery, then there's no reason why you can't install the smaller battery.

I always thought that the "R" designation on a battery meant reversed terminals? Are your cables long enough to reach?

Correct, but that just means reversed from the original configuration of the battery size. In other words, the polarity on a 26R is only backwards from a 26, but that may make it the same polarity as a 35.

That's what I thought. Thanks
