I admit I'm not very connected to this scene. But it seems to me that the majority of newer 4x4 vehicles better reflect what most people do with these vehicles. Most people who go offroad have modest requirements.
Yet there are some very capable offroaders today. Of course the Jeep Wrangler. There are many 4x4 pickups of all sizes. People tell me the Tacoma 4x4 is very capable. Lots of people have 4x4 half and three quarter ton trucks.
For the camper, hiker, mountain bike person, why won't a XTerra or FJ get the job done nicely?
Soccer moms don't buy/drive the 4x4 versions. They buy the 2WD versions.
Soccer moms don't buy either version. Their husbands buy the vehicles.

The most valuable tool a person can have there besides a handheld GPS (unless you have a satellite phone - no cell service inside Canyonlands) is a book of trail directions by Charles Wells. Don't even think about not reading it cover to cover before you go. Get the latest edition. Have a great time.
PS, that trail above is the Schaeffer Switchbacks.
Why does one need a lift and big tires to drive down a trail, as mathjak suggests they will do?
Hey, op...in my search for a new SUV (my current one is coming up on 10 years old), I have discovered the same thing. No awesome strict 4x4 get the job done stripped down SUVs anymore. All of them seem to be all fancified for mostly people hauling. It's disappointing. Not that I want to spend a lot of time climbing mountains in it or anything, but I'd like to own something I can do anything in, including go through unmanicured snow drifts, etc.

It sucks.
Blame the US government, not the manufacturers or importers. The specifications for cars and trucks are set for them by your nanny state government.
Best option is to buy used. Purists will say that the AMC CJ7 is the last real 4X4. I disagree. I think a Jeep XJ makes an excellent truck.
What we need is a government that would let us import vehicles that are legal in Europe across the board and a whole array of great vehicles would be available here. My favorite would be the Russian Lada Niva . Sort of the MoPed of 4X4's.
