Apologies if this is the wrong section
A couple of months ago my buddy from Quebec gets a speeding ticket in New york state, he was doing 85 in a 55 ,ok he pleads guilty and sends in the $375, this week he gets a $600 additional charge from the New York county involved for 8 accumulated demerit points..
When his Quebec drivers license comes up for renewal he will also have to pay charges on those accumulated demerit points to the tune of another $30 per point. Can New York State charge him for demerit points on a Canadian license or has there been a clerical error.$1300 seems really steep..
And yes i know he shouldnt have been speeding but in this particular case he got snookered, as following a slow moving vehicle for 20 miles a short passing zone presented itself, while he was making the pass the slower vehicle sped up kinda forcing my buddy to also speed up if he was going to complete the pass, wouldnt you know at the end of the short passing zone was one of New Yorks finest with radar at the ready.
Any one else get financially clobbered this way with exorbitant fees for speeding?
This is pathetic. And New York's "Finest" doesn't take into account the fact that the other driver didn't let him pass safely and was thereby being very aggressive? Disgusting.
It's things like this that show me it's all about revenue generation and NOTHING about safety. Disgusting. I'm sick to my stomach.

How would a cop, sitting in a car on the side of the road, know that "the other driver" had sped up? All the cop can observe from his static position is the speed of the two cars at the time that they pass his post.
In order to know what transpired in the seconds prior to the incident, the cop would have to been driving in and around the two cars in question, but based on the description that we have been given, it appears that the cop was stationed on radar duty on the side of the road.
Also--based on the description, it sounds like "the other driver" wasn't speeding at the time that the OP's friend was clocked at 85 mph, or at least he wasn't going anywhere near as fast as the OP's friend.
Overall, the most important points to consider are these:
>None of us--including the OP--were on the scene, and we are getting the OP's second-hand telling of a story/alibi that may or may not have been accurate in the first place.
>If the OP's friend really was driving at 85 mph in a 55 mph zone, he REALLY did deserve to be ticketed.

You don't even have to tell me, I already know it. The slower vehicle who sped up when your friend tried to pass had a Minnesota plate on it right? Typical jackazz move of the drivers around here.
It's too bad he didn't have a cop who would have sympathized.
was going 90 in a 55 in Arkansas (i live in Missouri) they ticketed me for 90 in a 55, C and I, failure to stop at a stop sign, and evading law inforcement
lucky i got a silver tongue. i only got the failure to stop
teach your friend how to talk. and he'll never have this problem again

My brother got a ticket for "140mph +" in 1970 in his 1970 Plymouth Roadrunner. I don't know what the fine was but I know he lost his license for 6 months and had to do community service for 6 months.
He's retired now and pretty wealthy. He had the Road Runner through a body off restoration and now it's in brand new condition. He has the ticket framed and hangs next to it in his pole shed.
It sounds like the county is trying to get their shake of money. I would get your friend to contact a lawyer. Those fees are rediculous. he paid his fine and that should have been the end of it.

The type of radar used can track the speed of 3 cars at the same time.
The diesel pickup truck was obviously in high acceleration mode as thick black smoke was pouring from his exhaust. However the details of the ticket arent in question, he was doing the speed he was charged with.
My buddy pled guilty to the speeding infraction and paid $375, its the After the fact charge for another $600 for NY state demerit points thats the issue.
Its a Quebec license and the demerit points will be transferred to his Quebec driving record who will also assess penalties for demerit points, i dont see paying for the demerit points twice as being fair.

.
In case any ones interested in what modern law enforcement is using it seems the device the trooper used is capable of tracking 4 cars simultaneously .
