100% computer controlled vehicles would rarely crash, the computer would "know" where all the other vehicles are and what they were going to do, it would never get too close to another vehicle and would only go as fast as the road conditions and/or posted speed limits allowed it to go.
It wouldn't wait until the last second to get into a lane needed for an exit ramp, and it would know how to smoothly merge into traffic when entering an interstate/highway.
They could also bypass construction or whatever.
In the 60's we saw movies in school that talked of "our lives in the year 2000" that told us of our automated cars ... still waiting for mine.
Manually operated flying cars would be a disaster of astronomical(no pun intended) proportions.

They also told us we would all have flying cars and roads would be antiquated.
Why not computer controlled flying cars?

Of course, there are flying cars. But, given the nanny state we live under, the FAA is unlikely to allow many of them to be used for commuting.

I don't want anything. Oh, I guess I want the days of horse drawn carriages back, and I want 60's muscle cars back. But, what one "wants" for the future doesn't matter unless you are a Marxist and even then, eventually technology and necessity take over.

I don't remember anyone claiming that they are now on the street with no driver. The article says they tested well and that they still have a few kinks.

Its like those self checkout lanes at a grocery store, 1 person handling 6 checkout machines = 8 jobs lost, meaning 6 cashiers and 3 baggers would of been there, but there is just 1 person helping. sure, 6 cashiers would be a bit quicker, but you get the point, i hope.

How many families are also supported by truck drivers?

This will solve a lot of freeway congestion in the future. You will be required to let the computer drive you to work during rush hours. The cars will stay in their lanes, make room for cars to merge and drive at safe speeds. Not cause problems like humans do. The freeways will be used to their capacity in a safe way.

It appears as though all the jobs that don't require a college education are drying up. There is more and more competition to get into college these days, in spite of the increasing cost. Hopefully, this will raise our educational standards, but what happens to the kids who don't continue with their education?
