That got me curious, as I know they had to exist before 1986, even though that was the first time we heard of them.

Of to wikipedia and beyond...

Hyundai was founded in 1947 with South Korean government backing as Hyundai Engineering and Construction. (Sounds like a communist plot!)

Hyundai Group - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hyundai formed the Hyundai Motors division in 1967, built its first car in 1975, exported its first car to Canada in 1984 (the Pony), then in 1986, they entered the US market with the Excel.

Hyundai acquired majority control of Kia in 1998.

As nice as they are they aren't there quite yet. I think they decided not to branch off because it would have driven cost up and they are still trying to shake off the old stigma.

Rubbish. My 2005 Honda Accord is at 145k with no major issues at all. Engine runs like it has another 150k in it. The 5-speed is one of the smoother manuals I've driven. I'd say Honda still has it. That's not to say that a new Hyundai won't return similar reliability, but you can still get a rock solid Honda.

I own a eltanta 2013 had for 16 months. No problems with it. Only thing i don't like about it is the tires. Other than that. Good car so far. Honda is over price, Toyota is over price. Hey they are all over price. Lot of people writing reviews, should not write them because of some little nothing to do with the cars performance, they down grade it, Like, my HYUNDAI won't go get me a beer and bring it to me , but the Honda, Toyota will. Sound dumb, but trying to make a point on some of these reviews people make. Or hears another one. Had my new, what ever' for two days now and it drives great, can't beat it. Better than Honda, Toyota Ford and on and on. Really, can you write a true view of a car/truck after driving it two days. ???Most people won't to know how it rides, any problems, and do they hold up. Cost per year and so on. This is a true review. Seen one review where because the person could not start his/her car from inside the house they down graded the car. REALLY !! If your to lazy to go out and start your car, well maybe you don't need a car. Thanks for taking the time to read this. Have a great week and God Bless.

I question Hyundai's long-term quality as well, but at least the Genesis is damn fun to drive and a great value. Speaking of that, Hyundai is more than just the Sonata. But I can't think of many other cars that hit all the right points like Genesis Coupe does. Fun to drive, more than decent power, lots of options, and available at a reasonable price.
+1 on the Genesis.

That is one really nice looking car! Truly one of the nicest and sportiest designs I've seen in awhile (for a reasonably priced car, that is).

Like many people though, I've reluctant when it comes to Korean cars. Yes, Hyundai has made some strides in terms of reliability and build quality.

Just not sure I'm ready to commit to a $25k+ car that I'm wary about holding up after the first 1-2 years.

Any current Hyundai Genesis 2.0T or V6 model owners out there who can chime in with their thoughts on the car?

I just hit 30K miles on my '12 Sonata 2.0T. Leased it almost 2 years ago to the day. No mechanical issues. Had to have alignment fixed (car pulled to left and front tires were shot quickly). Passenger seat would shift on hard turns, had that fixed.

I'd lease another Hyundai, they got above average residuals and they are cheap. I want AWD again, so I'm looking at leasing a '15 WRX next round. I'll check out the Genesis now that it has AWD but I don't think it will lease for under $400/mo $0 down....don't like to pay more than $13/day to rent my cars.

I have an '03 Sonata with 120,000 miles on it. Just had the timing belt replaced for the second time, new water pump, etc. The exterior styling is very handsome, slightly reminiscent of a Jaguar. The interior is roomy and comfortable. I always liked this car ... that's the reason I opted to have major work done on it as opposed to shopping around for a new car.

My one problem with this car has to do with pumping gas into it. I think it's an air vent problem or something, but it "clicks" off as if the tank is full, which is assuredly not the case. My mechanic supposedly fixed the problem when he did all the other work, but it still isn't fixed so he asked me to bring it back to the shop. It seems to be a common problem with Sonatas.

If you goto Safercar.gov and search for owner complaints, you will find that Hyundais have far more complaints than Hondas or Toyotas.

i had a 2010 sonata , i bought at 28k miles.. in 2011,,,it had 182k last week
i replaced the starter and belt,,,,thats it.
i paid 12,999 for that in 2011

for the past few months ive been looking to buy a newer car... a fusion, altima, accord, camry, impala, sonata avenger

the accord was probly the priciest,,,,but holds its value the best...the avenger is at the other end,,cheapest to buy, but depreciates faster than a ford escort..

i was looking for 2013 year, and did my research on all the sites.. i wanted the payments no more than 4 yrs and no more than 300/month

last weekend i traded my 2010 sonata in (with 182k miles, and some more maintenance that was needed)
for a 2013 car, with 25k for 13,995...
that car was another sonata ...
what a beautiful vehicle,,,, i got the payments to 279 month with the trade in

i needed a good mileage dependable car (i use it for work)

by far, this was the best vehicle for the money
