Imperial gallons and the way they test mileage over there vs here. It does get good mileage, however. They'll easily get mid 50 mpg (imperial) which is about 45-46 mpg (us). The UK has some overly generous ratings, sort of like the numbers we use for CAFE standards. The (revised) EPA numbers on window stickers/marketing is actually fairly close to what a normal driver can get. I usually beat them by a bit (unless I'm driving spiritedly, in which case they beat me by a lot)... but I also tend to annoy people with my habits of leaving a large space between the car in front of me on the freeway during rush hour (less braking!) and coasting from 50-60 mph down to 20-25 before touching the brakes on my way to traffic control devices.
I don't know if it's my old age, but I'm really getting less and less interested in horsepower wars. As long as it can do 0-60 in less than 9 seconds and I don't have to downshift to third to pass on the freeway, it's fast enough. A re-mapped 320d would be perfect. Decently engaging to drive, Prius-like mileage, not quite V6 family sedan acceleration but not far off.
