I had a buddy in high school with a Mercury Grand Marquee that I believe was a 1984. I remember looking through the manual and noticing it still had an 8 track option. You could actually get both the 8 track and or cassette with either an analog or DIGITAL radio display. 8 track with digital radio display, now that would be cool!!
would thy have not had a couple of years offering a factory head unit with both 8 track and cassette much like in the early-Mid 2000's they offed both CD and Cassette players from the factory?
Never seen an 8track/cassette combo head unit. That would be a lot going on in a small space. Way more mechanics than what was in the CD/cassette units.
I drove company cars back in 81-82, which was about the time we started getting cars with cassettes. My first CD player was in 2000 in a car that I owner myself.
When I bought that car, I didn't own any CDs. Our kids went out and bought us some.
Interestingly enough, I recently removed the 6 disc CD changer in my car and replaced it with an Aux in/USB/Bluetooth unit because I have 26 days worth of music on my phone. No more deciding which CDs to play and digging through them when I've heard those. And with that, I've noticed many newer cars not even coming with CD players, either, but with USB inputs and Bluetooth instead.
Anyone remember the days when CDs were fairly new and people used to hang one from the rearview mirror to show off the fact they had the latest tech? I always thought it would be funny to do the same with an 8 track as a joke. BUT, I hate stuff hanging from my rearview so I never did it...
Another good question.....which car had the first CD player?
Several sites list 1985 Mercedes-Benz as the first to have factory-installed CD players. In 1984 Sony offered units that one could purchase and install on their own. Apparently the first American car to factory-install the CD player was the 1987 Lincoln Town Car.
