In California we are allready paying in the $5 range. we didn't wait for summer driving to get us there. We have arrived at that price structure now and are still living.
Let me add that compared to the 1970's we are not doing too bad at that range. In 1970 people were paying on average $0.36 a gallon for gas. Back then people complained about the cost of gas. In the 1980's gas was averaging $1.25 a gallon and people were complaining about the cost of gas. By the 1990's the average price had declined to $1.19 a gallon and people were still complaining about the cost of gas.
In comparison my home could have been purchased for $27,000 by 1973. (That is when my next door neighbor bought his home.) Now those homes are in the $300,000 range, more than 11 X the cost back in 1973. A car in 1970 would set you back $3,900. Today a comparable sized car would set you back $30,000
Gas prices have been going up since i started using the stuff back in 65
i would reasonably predict it will continue to rise as time goes on.
$5gal? its going to happen sooner or later, not much we can do about it other than drive in a more economical way in more economical vehicles and avoid needless trips.

My first new car was $2,500 in 1973. My first house cost $50,000 in 1978 and sold (3 owners later) in 2006 for $640,000. Even at $5/gallon gas is cheap compared to the inflation on many things we buy every day.
Interestingly, my first new color TV was $400 for a 19", and I just paid slightly more than that for a 46" LED HDTV so there are exceptions!
Here in Canada we've been paying from $1.20-$1.40 a liter for some time, . $1.38 a liter here in Montreal today. The media here for some reason dont seem to be playing it up as a national emergency,in fact not many people including the media even talk about the issue..Why is it so vitally important in the USA when most of the western world would be glad to be paying only $5 a gallon? or is all this whining this just another rightwing political excuse to bash their leader....
the media used to be on our side... that is different now obviously because they would have a relentless pursuit against the rising cost and the halting of our building.
I started getting upset when it past $1.79 no kidding!
